The origin of the \"cross\"

I see it everywhere. It's on tombs, people make the shape of a cross on their chest, and Jesus was pinned to one where he died. What's the origin of the cross? I can't seem to find any significance of it except that it resembled the shape of a human. But then again making a holy symbol after the shape of man is kind of eccentric.

well, I think it started when people started to put people on crosses! so the were taller then us, but I think it ment our higth, the wood across was ment for arms and above that was for the head! But thats all I do know!
