First day fail

So, I get to my math class bright and early this morning. Not exactly excited to be back, but hey. A girl walks in, right before class starts, and she's a girl I had a class with last year. She and I get along, so she sits next to me. The teacher begins, goes over the syllabus, and then we start in on the lecture, a review on exponents from the previous class. And the girl next to me just starts staring at the board with a panicked look. She doesn't get it. She admits, loudly, to only passing the previous math class with barely a 1.0 (and that's just because the teacher was really nice, according to her). Things continue to get worse, and she starts to have a panic attack. And I sit there, trying to get her to calm down. I tell her she'd be better off dropping this class, and going back to the previous math class, so that she stands a better chance of learning the material, because there's not a chance that she's going to pass this class this quarter. I tell her to go to the admissions office and switch classes. It would be better than failing this class and having to take it again. And her response? "No! I can't!" ... WHY NOT?! /end first day back rant.

Well, to be completely honest, I would help...erh, kinda tutor her if I had the time. Maybe you could try! It's totally understandable if you don't want to, but that would be my first action is to tutor the panicked student. I do think the reason she can't go back to the other class is out of embarressment. I know I would be afraid and embaressed. Just a suggestion.

I do try to help her. But I suck at helping. ^^; And plus, what would be more embarrassing, getting an F and taking the same class again or taking the previous class again, getting a better grade, and then passing this class?

Hon, I failed Algebra twice in high school. I got F's both times. I'm just not good at arithmetic or math. That said, to be able to take college Math 1+2, I have to take basic arithmetic all over again, then algebra, trig, and per-calculus. Do you have any idea how long that's going to take me? FOREVER!!!! Yeah, I'm discouraged about as much a your friend.

The math class she barely passed was pre college math... I'm just thinking it'd look better on her transcript to have pre college math twice, and with a better grade the second time, than 2 college algebra classes, one failed...

I only had the Business 226, Public Speaking, and Math 1+2 to do before either the Pell stopping or me graduating. I had to quit in 2009 due to the cancer.. I was going to get the Pell and do the 2011 fall semester, only they found the spread to the liver this past summer.. So failing or passing doesn't mean anything to me anymore.

It's nice that you're trying to help this girl, and she probably should take the advice...but I could maybe, sort of see where she's coming from...but not really. She should take your advice.
