I got an e-mail that had a disturbing video along with it, and I wanted to tell you about it so you could help. The video was regarding this trailer in Missouri that tipped over and several horses (most of them former pets) who were getting sent to slaughter for consumption overseas were very badly injured and some died. I am a major horse lover, but even if you personally aren't, you can't tell me that after watching the video and seeing what those horses went through that you didn't at least feel sorry for them! Please read this message that came with the e-mail and please act accordingly to it, even if you aren't a horse fan, because I'm sure you know someone who is! Please help me help the horses! Thanks! horsechic1990 P.S. Here is the message: Dear Friend, The time to act is now! The U.S. House passed the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503) last Congress, but there wasn't time for the bill to get through the Senate. This Congress has already introduced this important legislation again, however, and we must take action now to prevent the annual slaughter of more than 100,000 horses in the United States for human consumption abroad. Please join with me and contact your U.S. Representative and two Senators now and urge them to cosponsor the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/ S. 311). Here is the link: https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_horse_slaughter?rk=w1LDvsd1R_xuW Here is more on it too: The House voted 263-146 on this important legislation (H.R. 503) last fall, and the Senate approved related legislation by a vote of 69-28 in 2005. I now hope that Congress will act quickly to finally end the terribly inhumane practice of horse slaughter and make sure our horses are never again subjected to the horrors of slaughter for French and Belgian menus. Thank you for your help.

Here is more info. regarding horse slaughter in the U.S. Perhaps this will help prompt you to help the cause (it's from this link: https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_horse_slaughter/explanation ) What's At Stake? Help Save Horses Right Out of the Gate The Ugly Truth of Horse Slaughter More than 100,000 horses are slaughtered for food yearly in the United States. Many thousands of live horses are also transported across the border to Canada for slaughter. Show horses, racehorses, foals born as a "byproduct" of the Premarin© industry (a female hormone replacement drug), wild horses, carriage horses, and family horses are victims of the horse slaughter industry. Horses have never been raised for human consumption in America. However, American horses are being killed to feed the palates of overseas diners in Italy, France, Belgium, and Japan. Irresponsible owners seeking an easy and profitable means of disposing of their animals provide the slaughter industry with horses. Thousands more are stolen every year for the horsemeat trade. Documents obtained from the Bureau of Land Management, the agency responsible for protecting America's wild horses, show that federally protected wild horses have been sent to slaughter for years. Still others are purchased at auction, where equines have been found for sale who are sick, sore, lame, disabled, blind, or pregnant. Killer-buyers and slaughterhouse operators would like you to believe that all of the horses they slaughter are old and past recovery and have arrived there legally. In truth, some horses may be sick or injured because of neglect but many more are sound and in good health. Horses bound for slaughter plants are shipped, frequently over long distances, in inhumane conditions. They are typically given no food, water or rest. Often, terrified horses and ponies are crammed together and transported to slaughter in double-deck trucks designed for shorter animals such as cows and pigs. The truck ceilings are so low that horses are not able to hold their heads in a normal, balanced position. Inappropriate floor surfaces cause slips and falls, and sometimes even trampling. Some horses arrive at the slaughterhouse seriously injured or dead. Transportation accidents where trucks have overturned have caused human fatalities as well as terrible suffering and death for the horses. Under federal law, horses are required to be rendered insensible to pain prior to slaughter, usually with a captive bolt pistol, which shoots a metal rod into the horse's brain. However, undercover footage has shown that some horses-struggling as they are shackled and hoisted by a rear leg-are improperly stunned and may still be conscious when their throats cut. » Urge your legislators to cosponsor and support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

i just want to point out that you shouldn't click on links that are provided in emails like that. people send emails that are mostly made up so that the recipients feel band and follow along. there are a lot of scams that will get you to give your name and stuff for purposes other than what you think you're signing up for.

All the cool kids are doing it. What's the big deal? We'll skip lunch, slaughter a horse or two, and we'll be back in time for 4th period. You want to be down, don't you?

Llywen, just about all horses are treated inhumanely both during slaughter and while they're being transported to slaughter. That is why the Human Society is pressing the government to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. Don't believe me, then read this e-mail I got from Patty Murray (she's one of the Senators for Washington state). The only thing I changed was I put my screenname after "Dear" instead of my real name. : Dear horsechic1990: Thank you for sharing your thoughts about horse slaughter. I appreciate hearing from you. Each year, more than 60,000 horses are slaughtered for human consumption in the U.S. or shipped to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico. The U.S. processes an estimated 12,000,000 pounds of horsemeat annually, which is then shipped overseas where it is considered a delicacy in many countries. Horses are targeted for slaughter regardless of gender, age, or breed. They can range from Amish working horses to accomplished show ponies. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) “Guidelines for Handling and Transporting Equines to Slaughter,” the majority of the horses sent to slaughter are in “good” condition. Passed in October 2005, the fiscal year 2006 Agriculture Appropriations bill prohibited funding of inspections that would have allowed horses to be slaughtered and sold as food. I supported this amendment during the Senate debate on the Agriculture Appropriations bill, which passed by a large margin in both Houses of Congress, and I was pleased that it was retained during final negotiations on the legislation. However, in February 2006, the Department of Agriculture made an end run around this funding ban, making a rule that allows horses to be slaughtered for food. This was contrary to the clear intent of those of us in Congress who supported the Agriculture Appropriations bill’s ban on funding for horse slaughter. As you may know, Representative John Sweeney (R-NY) and Senator John Ensign (R-NV) introduced the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503 and S. 1915, respectively) to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption. The legislation would permanently outlaw this practice in the United States, as well as prohibit the sale and transport of horsemeat intended for human consumption. On September 7, 2006, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 503. I cosponsored S. 1915 in the Senate during the 109th Congress but unfortunately it did not come up before the full Senate for a vote. Throughout my Senate tenure, I have consistently supported efforts to protect animals from cruel and inhumane treatment. I do, however, understand the unease expressed by many horse owners and breeders over the potential impact of the legislation. For some, slaughter is seen as a solution to disposal of their aged or ailing animals. For many people, horses provide wonderful companions and are an iconic symbol of our national culture and history. Should the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act come before the full Senate for a vote during the 110th Congress, I will certainly keep your thoughts in mind. Once again, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any additional concerns. Sincerely, Patty Murray United States Senator
